How to End Self-Doubt in 5 Minutes or Less
Have you ever experienced doubt or uncertainty about a person or a situation, maybe even a decision you were faced with? When it happens, do you sometimes find yourself withdrawing from the situation, second guessing your personal feelings or intentions?
The doubt and uncertainty creeping into your conscious mind starves your confidence and weakens any trust in your judgment, intuition and even belief you have within yourself.
Self-doubt is like having your toilet plugged. And, if you have ever experienced a stopped-up toilet, you understand the fear that rises as the water begins to flow to the top and starts its nasty decent over the rim! Ugh! It seems to happen so quickly, that you have no time to react!
So, what do you do when you feel your self-doubt flushing over the rim? Improve your reaction time! As you feel self-doubt rising, reach down and turn off its source. Yes, reach down and turn the water line off under the commode! Now, you have some time to grab a plunger to relieve the plug.
All right, now that you are feeling confident about the commode
let’s clean up your self-doubt in other areas.
Self-doubt is the mass that is plugging your confidence from freely flowing in the direction that keeps you positive, upbeat, courageous and hopeful. Your reaction time can be improved within 5 minutes, if you can “consciously” choose to respond when you start to feel self-doubt rising. That means acting quickly to turn off the source.
Quickly, “consciously” acknowledge that you are experiencing self-doubt. This is the same as “turning off the water source”. The next step is to grab the plunger, and the plunger represents the ability to wade through the feelings of doubt, fear and uncertainty to dislodge and discover the cause!
Most, if not all of the “cause” is what I like to call a “patterning”. Our brains are designed to “match” up memories that contain similar patterns. In short, if I ask you to recall a situation where you felt very confident, your mind would immediately go through its files and come up with a string of “confident” memories.
The “patterning” begins when your brain is analyzing the situation and recalling memories that are the same. Are you feeling “doubt” right now? Your brain is clogged with multiple examples of when you experienced “self-doubt”. Once you have identified what is creating the clog, in this case “self-doubt” you can flush!
It doesn’t end here, because if you continue to do the same thing, I can pretty much guarantee that you will face another clog soon. If the toilet was clogged with excess paper, the solution is to use LESS PAPER! If you were clogged with self-doubt, STOP DOUBTING YOURSELF!
Oh, I can almost hear you saying, “Oh yea Donna, how do you do that?”
It’s as easy as using less paper! Self-doubt in yourself means you don’t feel confident in yourself!
“Dah, Donna”, you say, “tell me something I don’t know?”
Self-doubt means you don’t have a strategy of “confidence”. Confidence is the result of fulfillment. When a plan works, you feel confident to replicate the plan again and again and again! Have you ever watched a young baby learning to walk? They don’t just stand up and walk with ease – each time the baby stands without falling – the strategy to stand is reinforced. When a step is taken, the strategy to stand and take a step is reinforced until it becomes a subconscious “pattern” to walk, then run, then jump, then climb.
Develop a strategy to turn what is creating the self-doubt into small steps to create a pattern of confidence towards completing your goal.
If you are preparing for an interview for the “job of your dreams”, and you are experiencing self-doubt, what information do you need to build your confidence level? Ask questions of those who are experienced interviewers, do a mock interview with possible questions you might be asked and how you can best answer them.
Having this strategy gets the plug loosened so your confidence level can flow freely.
To sum it all up – self-doubt is only your brain’s way of saying, “I need a strategy towards fulfilling my goal”.
Act fast when self-doubt rises, ask yourself why you are feeling self-doubt; then develop a strategy to get the information you need, one step at a time.
